Poor management at hospitals is almost cliche, but Hardin Memorial is among the worst. Let me say up front that many complaints I have seen about HMH (and many other hospitals) centers around the ER. This one does not. In fact, my wife had two good experiences at this ER during her recent pregnancy. This review is specific to the delivery of our baby and next 48 hours. My wife gave birth to our first three children in Virginia and our daughter at HMH via induction. The morning we showed up for the induction, we waited six hours in the triage room due to "lack of bedspace." While doing so, we had the honor of listening to the worst excuses from other women between 34-36 weeks doing anything they could either for oxycodone or to try and convince the staff they were in labor and needed pitocin to help them along. So I get it, the staff deals with crazy people on a regular basis. Once we got a room (and the staff was sure to remind us how lucky we were to get a room) the labor and delivery was fairly seamless. My wife is in great shape and gave birth naturally to all of our children. Once she reached 10cm dilated, labor took about 5 minutes or less with all of the children. This birth was about 30 seconds with two pushes. The Doctor (Dr Sebree) was professional. The nurses were okay. Shortly after giving birth, my wife was transferred to the "Mom and Baby" side, and this is where the issues with this hospital became apparent. The quality of nurses ranged from great to completely clueless, and communication was sorely lacking. On the good side, one nurse took our daughter for about three hours and cleaned her up so my wife could sleep. On the bad side, other nurses must have asked my wife over and over if she wanted pain meds. She practically forced oxy into her hands. As I said earlier, my wife had an event-free delivery and couldn't believe how good she felt. She was stunned a their obsession with passing out pills. No wonder this area has a drug problem. Nothing was as bad as receiving clearance to leave the place. It is no wonder there is no beds available when they can't perform the simple task of conducting some minor appointments and signing a couple of papers. My wife wasn't able to check out at the typical 24 hours because she gave birth late in the evening, and they don't discharge after 6PM. Okay, so we were ready early the next morning. Dr. Sebree came in early and cleared my wife by 9AM. Our daughter was eating, pooping, received all shots, everything normal. It's not like this isn't our fourth baby. We asked about when our daughter could get cleared by the neonatologist, and the excuses started to pile up. First, the doctor got caught behind a car wreck and was late. Then another baby had and intubation. Then it was another procedure. Then, they needed to do some paperwork and give me wife the "don't shake your baby" speech. Oh wait, they did that AT LEAST four times over the span of three hours. We asked about the doctor again. Nothing except the same incompetent nurse. Finally, the doctor came in like nothing was amiss. In fact, she didn't even know were waiting to check out. Seriously? Our three other kids are bouncing off the walls, my wife (a pretty patient person, unlike me) is ready to lose her mind because of the sheer incompetence. The nurse asks if we need help putting the baby in the car seat, whilst standing next to the baby already in the car seat for twenty minutes. Then, the nurse has to "escort us to the car to make sure the baby is secure in the seat." Get downstairs and she says, "oh you have to pull around to the front." REALLY? I have been waiting for three hours and you never thought to tell us about this? So, I go all the way around to the parking garage, drive back around to the front and load up the family. Was never happier to leave a hospital in my life. |
