Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) carry out their work under the supervision of physicians and nurses (RNs), and are an integral part of the medical team.
LPNs also possess the skills and confidence necessary in carrying out their responsibilities: monitoring the physical condition of the patient (measurement of temperature, pressure, pulse, height and weight of the patient); preparing and administering injections, dressing operations, etc.
Licensed Practical Nursing often are universal health care workers, but some LPNs provide care at home, no less important specialization. It should be noted that nurses are also at work all day in a week, and any time it may need their help.
Duties of the Licensed Practical Nursing
The list of medical duties and services provided by employees of LPNs, includes:
- Care for sick patients - bathing, dressing, help in moving around the hospital, etc.
- Monitoring of the patient - control of health of the patient, his both positive and negative changes, followed by a warning to doctors and nurses, to take the necessary measures to provide assistance.
- Monitoring Charts - monitoring changes in indications on the maps used in hereinafter by doctors and nurses.
- Collection of samples for testing.
- Dressings, enemas, intravenous droppers and injections, performing certain procedures, and many more (under the strict supervision of a physician or RN, LPN).
Compulsory education and prospects to become Licensed Practical Nursing
The demand for LPNs is increasing every year, and they are required in hospitals and nursing homes, and medical institutions. To become an LPN, you must obtain a license by passing a special exam - Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN), which is administered by the local Council of Nurses.
Prepare for the exam can help community colleges or special schools for LPN. Training programs for LPN include the study of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pediatrics, nursing, first aid, nutrition, as well as the practical part of the program under the supervision of specialists.
Many experienced LPNs, receive training a highly specialized, such as a nurse LPN (RN) programs, obstetrics and oncology for further career.
