I was referred to Dr. Ulstad by my family physician, as my girlfriend and I are trying to plan a pregnancy, and a pelvic... ultrasound showed that my ovaries are enlarged. When I went in for my 1st appointment, the staff weren't the usual friendly, bubbly desk people that I'm accustomed to. I waited about 15 minutes, then about another 15 minutes in the room. When she entered, she was semi-friendly, but acted as if she was in a hurry. As we discussed my ultrasound, I told her about my lifestyle and my plans to have a child. At that point the whole tone changed. To make a long story short, she told me that her office does not help same sex couples inseminate, that I was too fat to try and conceive, that there was a medication that would help with the condition that she suspected I had and that the medication would regulate my hormones making me much more fertile, but I needed to lose the amount of weight that she determined before she even considered prescribing. She said that she would gladly prescribe me birth control to regulate my hormones though! To make sure that I had the condition that she thought I had, there were blood tests that needed to be run. Instead of sending me to the lab and to schedule a follow up appointment, she proceeded to ask me if I even wanted to come back. When I said yes, as I thought that I had no other options, then she decided to go ahead and get the lab papers and schedule the next appointment. I went and got the labs done, my bloodwork came back normal, and when I went back to the office for my follow up, I discovered that my appoontment had been cancelled and that she was not in the building, and I needed to reschedule. I rescheduled, but after leaving I found a LGBT friendly registry for ob/gyns all across the state of Michigan. Needless to say, I did not return! I'm a fairly heavy girl, I'm 5'2" and wear a size 12. I have no problem losing weight, but I will not let a doctor dictate to me what size I need to wear to proceed with the plans I've made regarding my future, or discriminate against me because of my lifestyle. I've researched the condition that I may have, and the treatment is as simple as prescribing a medication that's also used to treat diabetes. It works in over 90% of cases, and increases fertility dramatically. Could we have started there? I wouldn't have minded traveling to be inseminated! If you're LGBT or are close to someone that's LGBT, I wouldn't recommend this doctor. more details
