We were on vacation in Chattanooga and needed to go to the ER. My daughter had mono the year before and we felt that we ...needed to go for a precaution. Doctor Tompkins saw my daughter for a total of 10 minutes. He seemed to be a bit annoyed that we came in. Then he subsequently charged us $553 for the visit. This was on top of the $436 that the ER charged us and the $120 copay. Diagnosis? A cold. So for 10 minutes with an annoyed doctor, we were charged over $1000. This hospital and this doctor is what is wrong with healthcare in America. I appealed the outrageous charges and they declined the appeal because "that's the standard fee." more details
