BAD BEYOND BELIEF: HERNIA SURGERY AT NFRMC THAT ALMOST KILLED ME
PETER SARANTOS SHODDY SURGERY MEETS CRITERIA FOR M...EDICAL MALPRACTICE.
1) DUTY TO THE PATIENT: Peter Sarantos has a duty to his patients, to provide treatment that is in line with the “medical standard of care” Sarantos fell far short from acceptable standards of care. and I sustained injuries resulting from Sarantos’ incompetence.
2) BREACH OF DUTY: SARANTOS LIES TO ME TO COVER HIS SURGICAL MISTAKE, AND THE NEXT DAY I HEMORRAGE
Peter Sarantos MD and his PA Cynthia Anders PA-C lied to me about the events of my hernia surgery. They both stated the cause of the excessive bleeding during the surgery was unknown but because of the bleeding an open procedure was performed instead of the laparoscopic procedure scheduled. I have 3” incisions to the left and right pubic area. T
he medical records (Fig 1), indicates Sarantos and his PA Cynthia Anders PA-C lied to me to cover the mistake. He was probably embarrassed because before the surgery he said it would be easy. And he must have been even more embarrassed because he video recorded the botched surgery for teaching purposes, as I signed a waiver. The bottom line is Sarantos caused the bleeding and he lied to cover it up. Sarantos tore blood vessels near my bladder on the right side early during the laparoscopic procedure. He used the open procedure to repair the torn blood vessels. Sarantos and his PA never mentioned tearing or cutting anything. Sarantos and his PA withheld the information from me- the patient. The surgical mistake remained secret until the next day, hours after I was discharged from NFRMC, the sutures holding the torn blood vessels together ruptured and I suffered an internal hemorrhage at home. .
It was several hours after I arrived home when the torn blood vessel ruptured. It felt like a bullet to the right groin. I fell to the floor, crawled to the cell phone and called 911. I went back to NFRMC Emergency department. The right side incision was re-opened to access the pelvic cavity, the blood clots washed out for leak detection. The blood clots blocked the blood flow to my right leg and I developed a DVT- excruciating swollen purple leg, twice the size of the left. Then the blood went into my scrotum and it was the size of a melon, and you can imagine the non-therapeutic comments.
3) CAUSATION: The medical records verify that Peter Sarantos caused the bleeding issues when he tore the blood vessels during surgery. A contributing factor was Sarantos made no mention of the injury to me after the surgery. Another contributing factor to the hemorrhage was the excessive walking after discharge to obtain pain medications. The discharge should have been without incident, but Sarantos forgot to sign the prescriptions, .I had to make multiple trips to the pharmacy after surgery because of his error... If Sarantos and his PA were concerned with my safety they would have made sure the discharge went smoothly after screwing up the surgery, they knew I had torn blood vessels. It was one blunder after another. Minimum standards of care were not met and that lead to the hemorrhage. It was preventable.
4) DAMAGES
Excruciating Out of Control Pain
Internal hemorrhage and Major blood loss
DVT blood clot to right leg (from groin to ankle)
Damaged hernia mesh on the right side. Understandably it was damaged when the ER physician reopened the incision to lavage the blood clots out of the pelvic cavity of leak detection.
Retrograde Ejaculation ((Nerve damage to the bladder) ejaculate into the bladder
Bills from NFRMC for more than $238,000 (I stopped counting and sent them to AVMED)
I am extremely fortunate and thankful for the ER team that saved my life The ER team were one of the bright spots during my ordeal. Hopefully Sarantos will not butcher anyone else, but be prepared. more details
