While I was generally pleased with my care throughout my pregnancy, my labor experience with Dr. Paschall was horrible. ...She does not support natural births and is a fan of scheduling unnecessary inductions a week early. I went into labor earlier than that, so luckily did not have to deal with the pressure to be induced to fit her schedule, BUT it was clear that she wasn't pleased (it was a Sunday) and the care I received reflected that. She checked me at 10 a.m. When I was at a 3 and said she would be back at 4 p.m. to check me. She assumed (wrongly) that I would have my baby early the next morning. I watched the clock all afternoon and asked the nurse (who also was not very helpful) to check me at 2:30. The pain was getting much worse and I wanted to see if I had made progress. I was at a 7-8. You would think my Dr would have called to check on me or the nurse would have notified her. (Doctors are supposed to be near after you get to a 7). I watched the clock for 4 p.m. thinking Dr. Paschall would come like she said. It came and went and, finally, I screamed for her. That is when my incompetent nurse checked me- I was at 10. She had me roll on my side and HOLD my baby IN while she tried to page Dr. Paschall. Dr. Paschall called back, said she would be there in 5 minutes (which is eternity when you should be pushing your baby out). It took her over 20 minutes to get there. It was horrible and scary. My nurse didn't know what to do so she stood in the hallway instead of helping me get started (this was at Baptist- I don't recommend for natural). When Dr. Paschall FINALLY showed up, she said, "I heard you've been in a lot of pain. I told you to get the epidural". That wasn't true, she said she would support me. In between contractions she was gossiping with the nurse. After one push there was a longer pause between contractions and she asked me if I had "scared my contractions away". Which in my frightened state, I actually got scared my baby was stuck. I actually pushed my sweet girl out in 20 minutes, and I probably could have done it faster if I didn't waste my energy waiting for the doctor. She should have been honest and sent an on call doctor. Dr. Paschall wasn't on hospital grounds when I was ready she was actually at home (20 minutes away). If she would have checked up on me better she would have known she needed to get there.
When she was pushing my afterbirth out she was scolding me and telling me, this part hurts too, and that's why you get an epidural. While she was sewing my tear up, I wasn't numb. She acted like the local anesthesia didn't "take". I've gotten opinions from other surgeons who say she must not have given enough or even any. I felt needles and sharp pulling so it's hard to say whether I had any shots or it was her sewing only. There is more to the story that I am very unhappy with, but I think I've said enough. I did not return to her for the post check up. more details
