Very troubling treatment, treatment of patients, pattern of communication with insurance company (or lack of communicati...on thereof), troubling philosophical pronouncements, failure to diagnose accurately, arbitrary outbursts.
Would frequently have outbursts about ANY call after hours infringing on his home time. I was quite physically ill much of the time while I saw Dr. Tsappis, and I called at Dr. Tsappis's private number (which he gave me) a TOTAL of 5 times. Yelled at my parents for calling. Terrible.
Never got a diagnosis. Dr. Michael Tsappis would change the diagnosis. Did not communicate with therapist, even though used undue leverage by threatening to cease communicating with insurance company if I did not see his choice of therapist. Awful. This is simply weird stuff. Ugh. more details
This doctor is horrendous (I'm actually really, really sorry to say). To start with the basics, his bedside manner is pr...etty good. He is not condescending. Dr. Tsappis treated me differently than other psychiatrists. Dr. Tsappis didn't make a diagnosis early on. However, he failed to make a diagnosis at all. This is coming from someone who had been partially disabled for a period of time, with psychiatric, and medical problems (including cancer). ANY doctor I've seen has testified to insurance to keep me temporarily on my original health plan - and there have been MANY doctors. Dr. Michael Tsappis refused to do this, out of fear of incurring the disfavor of the insurance company and jeopardizing his own budding career. Yes, it would in fact be illegal to remove me from my policy at that point in time. But that is what Dr. Tsappis tried to do.
That said, it took me a while to realize why Dr. Tsappis was not condescending - it really did. It's because he has no emotions. See it for yourself. It's really creepy. Perhaps the emotional level of a child, but no more. That's why I could recommend him as a child psychiatrist, but nothing else.
I had two other ongoing health issues while seeing doctor Michael Tsappis. I was diagnosed with cancer (in my twenties), suffered some minor seizures, and developed a heart problem. As I wrote, Dr. Tsappis made it DIFFICULT to work with insurance, even in light of these. Honestly, I kid you not. Please stay away. He quite deceitfully, and illegally (it is now on record legally, finally) failed to fill out any insurance forms, while CLAIMING otherwise. Please away from this guy. Like, far, please. I can speak from personal experience that the health damages to me have been immense.

I'm one of those people who always looked at very negative reviews of doctors on the online review sites and cringed. I ...always questioned their credibility somewhat. After all, what if the person was just having a bad day, or they're a negative, cynical person. But here I am, writing a review and I consider it important. I consider it accurate, and I hope other people read it.
Dr. Michael Tsappis is a child psychiatrist. I saw him as a young adult ; That might be worth considering - I don't know. I agree with the few other reviews of Dr. Tsappis you can find online. He is not condescending (a good thing), and bedside manner is not like a typical psychiatrist's. I was looking for someone who wasn't like a typical psychiatrist, and Dr. Tsappis treated me differently than other psychiatrists.
He engaged me in conversation, often not even about anything clinical or psychiatric. He did not make a diagnosis early on. He didn't push drugs. In fact, he didn't push anything, including a diagnosis, ever! When I pushed him to tell me the diagnosis, his answer was vague. And it would change, a lot. My diagnosis would change practically every time I asked him. That's not refreshing. That's disturbing. And with no reservation, I would add it is incompetent.
Now, finally, I have a firm diagnosis. About 8 doctors agree on the diagnosis. In fact, no one who I have seen since leaving Dr. Tsappis disagrees with it. It's actually a simple disorder - everyone has heard of it.
But I would never write a review just because a doctor misdiagnosed me, although I'm not happy about it. I had two other ongoing health issues while seeing doctor Tsappis. I was diagnosed with cancer (in my twenties), suffered some minor seizures, and developed a heart problem. Dr. Tsappis made it DIFFICULT to work with insurance, even in light of these. Honestly, I kid you not. Please stay away. He quite deceitfully, and illegally (it is now on record legally, finally) failed to fill out any insurance forms, while CLAIMING he had. It really confused the health insurance company, and my family for a while! I began to realize why Dr. Tsappis was not condescending. It's because he has no emotions. He has the emotional level of about child, perhaps. I'm being serious. See for yourself. And I hate saying something that sounds mean, but it's true.
That's why I could recommend him as a child psychiatrist, but nothing else.. I can speak from personal experience that the health damages to me have been immense. I'm a young person, and these things have delayed my life for a few years. Stay away from this doctor. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Good luck! more details
