Saw Dr. Rivers on a Monday for a dark spot on the edge of my vision in the left eye which I had noticed over the weekend.... He said it was a young retinal detachment, and it could be operated on that day as a medical emergency, or the next day. Not knowing anything about retinal detachments, I left the decision in his hands; I only said I didn't want to do anything that would jeopardize my vision. The operation was then set up for the next day, but by the time I was operated on the detachment had spread to the center of my vision. After the operation was over I was left with very distorted and unuseable vision in that eye, due to several folds in the reattached retina. I now have severe metamorphopsia and distortions in that eye, particularly in the central area. It is impossible to read or use the eye for much of anything, and it is extremely upsetting to have to live with it. I believe that if my retinal detachment had been treated the same day, like the true medical emergency it was, I would have preserved useful vision in that eye.more details
