Dr. Mark K Li, MD works in Silver Spring, Maryland is a specialist in Internal Medicine and graduated Providence Hospital. Dr. Li is affiliated with Holy Cross Hospital, Washington Adventist Hospital and practicing for 46 years
I have been a patient of Dr. Li for over ten years. Recently, I have had many bad experiences at his office. In Septem...ber 2012, I was applying to substitute teach at Fairfax County Public Schools and needed a doctor’s referral to get a chest x-ray. Instead of getting a referral, Dr. Li suggested running blood tests and checking for things I did not ask for. He explained he could not give me the referral without doing a blood test because I have not been in his office in a long time. I have no idea what a blood test has to do with a chest x-ray referral, but I had to do what he said in order to get my referral. I ended up sitting in the office watching a mindless YouTube video about how lack of vitamin D can cause cancer. Again, if I came in for a referral for a TB chest x-ray, why am I watching a 15 minute video about vitamin D? After that, Dr. Li wanted to show me an email he received about sugar. The email showed approximately how many sugar cubes were in a soda, how many sugar cubes were in a cup of Starbucks coffee, etc. He asked me if I was aware of the sugar content in my drinks, and I informed him that I am very aware since I am pretty health conscious. He admitted that he had no idea that there was that much sugar in some of the foods and drinks he eating/drinking. It really bothered me that my physician was not aware of something so elementary. After that, a couple weeks later, I received a bill for $150.00. I called to ask what I was billed for since all I needed was a referral and the receptionist told me that I was being charged for a physical. Dr. Li charged me for a physical when I did not ask for one. He also did not tell me he was performing a physical. After refusing to pay for a procedure I did not ask for and did not know was even done to me, the office contacted my insurance company claiming I was there for another reason other than a physical and my insurance paid them. I assume that is insurance fraud. I was not told of what my insurance company paid for that day, but all I needed was a referral for a TB x-ray.
In July of 2013, I got accepted into optometry school and needed a vaccination form to be filled out by my primary care doctor. The information that I needed to be filled out by him was the date of my last TB chest xray, my last VDRL test, the results and the dates of my hepatitis shots. All of these procedures were performed in his office. It would have taken less than a minute of his time just to write down a couple dates and to sign and date my form. I was told that he could not do that without charging me for a visit. I asked why I would need to be charged for a visit when he just has to fill out information from my medical file. I refused to pay for a visit because I no longer had insurance coverage and last time I went for a visit, Dr. Li charged me for procedures he did not even perform! Dr. Li wanted to charge me $50.00 to write down the dates of my hepatitis shots and the results from my TB chest x-ray and VDRL test. Now is it really about the $50.00? No. It is the principle that Dr. Li is a selfish, MONEY HUNGRY individual. He wanted to collect $50.00 to write down dates of procedures he performed? That is ridiculous! He already made money from my insurance company when he billed them for my last visit and now he wants $50.00 to fill out my school vaccination form? I am ashamed to call him my primary care doctor! We can definitely see where Dr. Li’s priorities are and it is NOT his patients. He hid upstairs of his practice while I waited 40 minutes in his waiting room. He refused to sign and date my vaccination form, BUT was willing to write the dates of my hepatitis shots on a blank piece of computer paper and stamp his name and address on the paper. Now, what is the difference between writing the dates on a blank piece of paper vs. writing it on my school vaccination form? I believe the answer to that is MONEY. When he finally came downstairs, I approached him and told him I had some questions. He put his hand on my shoulders and started to push me out of the office area. He said that he did not want to talk to me and would not answer any of my questions because I was not paying for a visit. He tried to pull a patient into the office as he was shoving me out. As my primary care doctor for over ten years, I am appalled that he would even treat me in that manner. He put his hands on me and acted as if I was nobody! All I needed was a vaccination form for school, and he clearly did not care unless he was getting paid.
Therefore, if you are interested in a primary care doctor who is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, Dr. Li is the PERFECT doctor for you. If you are looking for a doctor to charge you for procedures you never asked for, he is the PERFECT doctor for you. I will never ever go back to his office. I have informed my family members never to return also. As a medical professional, I have absolutely NO respect for Dr. Li and I fear for all of the patients under his care. Doctors are supposed to care about their patients, but he is all about the money. It would make sense if he wanted to charge me for treatment or medical advice, but I just needed him to fill out a form with information from my medical records. Going into the medical field myself, this is a lesson I will take with me. He is a great example of a medical professional I NEVER want to be. I will never treat my patients the way he has treated me. As a loyal patient of his for over ten years, the recent events in his office are unacceptable. I really hope that this review will persuade new and old patients of Dr. Li’s to go elsewhere. There are PLENTY of other doctors who will provide care in the best interest of the patient. Dr. Li is just looking to get paid so he can go on another vacation. more details
