Why I get up at 4am in the morning.About 3 months ago I made a commitment to myself that I would not allow the next Comrades Marathon to be just another run for me. Not that I mean any disrespect to the hundreds of runners who see the 89km Comrades Marathon as the ultimate achievement of their running careers. After I crossed the finish line in 10h40 - I realised that I could have run much faster, tried harder and hurt more. You see, I was blasé about the training in the months leading up................................................ht every step of the way. Others who crawled across the line and those who cramped horribly, yet still dragged themselves to the finish line in Durban. I didn't do anything of the sort. I was an imposter.For this year's race, I choose to make amends. I will train hard, and push the boundaries. I started training in September - building gradually and joined a dedicated running group. In November I signed up with a coach, and started track sessions.This year, I commit to earning my Comrades medal. |
